# Sending Work for Review

Updated October 19, 2026

A review is a series of stages. Each stage is either your team or your client, and a post moves on to the next stage once the current one approves it. You set the review in the **Review** section of the composer's **Schedule** tab. Reviews are available on Standard and Premium.

## What the Review Section Shows

Open **Schedule** in the composer. The **Review** section below the scheduling options tells you what will happen to the post before you change anything.

| What You See | What It Means |
| --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **No review. Publishes straight away.** | No workflow applies. The post goes out at its time unless you add a review. |
| **Suggested:** and a workflow name | A workflow is filled in for you. Keep it, select **Change** to edit it, or select **No review**. |
| **Required:** and a workflow name | The post has to go through that workflow. **View stages** shows its stages, which you cannot change. |

If you are a Creator, a post with no review reads **No review. It stays a draft until someone who can publish schedules it.**

## Sending a Post for Review

1. Open the post in the composer and select **Schedule**.
2. Choose **Post Now** or **Schedule**. If you are scheduling, set the date and time.
3. Under **Review**, select **Request review**. If a workflow is already filled in, select **Change** to open it.
4. In the **Review** dialog, use the menu at the top right to pick a workflow, **Choose people myself**, or **No review**.
5. Check the stages. See [Setting Up the Stages](https://maevesocial.com/guides/approvals-and-clients/sending-work-for-review#setting-up-the-stages).
6. Under **Details**, you can add a **Review label**, a **Closes at** time and an **Invitation note**.
7. Select **Confirm**.
8. Select **Submit for approval**, or **Send to client** if the first stage is a client stage. Check the summary and select **Submit for approval**.

Maeve Social creates the review and sends it straight away. The people in the first stage are told it is waiting for them, and the post appears in **Approvals**.

When a post goes to several channels and they match different workflows, the dialog lists each channel with its workflow and says each one gets its own review. Channels on the same workflow share one review.

A Post That Is Already in Review

The **Review** section reads **This content is already in review. Change its stages from the Reviews tab in Approvals.** See [Client Reviews](https://maevesocial.com/guides/approvals-and-clients/client-reviews) for changing a review that is running.

## Setting Up the Stages

When you choose your own stages, the review starts with one team stage. Stages run from the top, and each stage has to finish before the next one starts.

* **Add team stage** asks people in your workspace. Select **Add people** and search your team.
* **Add client stage** asks people outside your workspace by email. See [Client Reviews](https://maevesocial.com/guides/approvals-and-clients/client-reviews).
* **Any one approves** finishes the stage at the first approval. **Everyone approves** waits for everyone in the stage.
* **In order** is on team stages set to **Everyone approves**. Turn it on to ask one person at a time, top to bottom. Each person is asked after the person before them approves. Use the arrows beside each name to set the order.
* **Remind them** is on for every new stage, after 2 days. Anyone in the stage who has not answered by then gets one reminder. Set any number of days from 1 to 30, or turn it off.
* Use the arrows at the top of a stage to move it, and the cross to remove it.

The text under the stages reads the review back in full. The line at the bottom of the dialog shortens it, for example **Team, Alex, then Sam, then client, Jess.**

If you change the stages of a workflow, they become your own stages, and the menu reads **My own stages**. Your own stages name people, so replace any role with the people you want to ask.

Managers and Editors can add team and client stages. Creators can ask their team, and can send a workflow that includes a client stage, but cannot add a client stage of their own. Viewers cannot send work for review.

## Workflows

A workflow is a saved review that Maeve Social fills in for the posts it matches. Managers set workflows up in **Settings > Approvals** under **Workspace**. Everyone else in the workspace can view them.

* —Everything elseAny content the workflows above do not pick up ends up here. Right now it needs no approval, so anyone who can schedule it can publish it.Require approval

Illustration of the workflow list in Settings > Approvals, checked from the top with Everything else pinned last. Sample workflows and people.

1. Open **Settings > Approvals** and select **New workflow**.
2. Under **Name**, enter a **Workflow name**.
3. Under **Stages**, add the stages. A team stage can name people or a role, such as **Any manager**.
4. Under **Applies to**, choose what the workflow runs for, using **Channels**, **Platforms**, **Post types**, **Author**, **Labels**, **Pillars**, **Formats** and **Campaigns**.
5. Under **Mode**, choose **Required** or **Suggested**.
6. Select **Save workflow**.

How Maeve Social picks a workflow for a post:

* Within one row, any pick is enough. If you fill in more than one row, every row has to match.
* Required workflows are checked before suggested ones. Within each, the first workflow in the list wins. Use the arrows beside a workflow to move it.
* A suggested workflow with every row left on **Any** never runs on its own. Someone has to pick it in the composer.
* **Everything else** sits at the bottom of the list and covers whatever the workflows above it miss. Select **Require approval** on it, or **Require approval for everything** if you have no workflows yet, to send everything else through a review too.
* A role such as **Any manager** becomes the people who hold that role when the post is sent.
* A post is matched once, when it is sent for review or scheduled. Editing, switching off or deleting a workflow does not change reviews that are already running.

## Required Workflows

A post that a required workflow covers can only go through that workflow. In the composer its stages are read only and **No review** is not offered. It cannot be scheduled or published without the review. Once the review is running, a Manager can override it and give a reason. See [Team Approvals](https://maevesocial.com/guides/approvals-and-clients/internal-approvals).

A repeating post cannot go through a review. If a required workflow covers a post set to repeat, the composer asks you to turn off repeat so you can submit it for approval.

## The Scheduled Time

Sending a post for review keeps the time you chose. The post does not publish while it is in review.

* When the last stage approves it, the post is scheduled for that time.
* If the time passes while the post is still in review, Maeve Social clears the time when the post is approved. The conversation says **The time had passed by the time it was approved, so it was cleared.** Someone who can schedule then picks a new time.
* A post sent with **Post Now**, or with no time set, is approved without a time. It needs one before it can publish.
* Moving the time does not reset any approvals. Editing the content sends the review back to its first stage. See [Handling Feedback](https://maevesocial.com/guides/approvals-and-clients/handling-feedback).

## What Holds a Post Up

Each post in **Approvals** shows its status.

| Status | What to Do |
| ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Team stage | Wait for the people in the stage, or send them a reminder |
| Client stage | Wait for your client, or send them a reminder |
| Changes requested | Read the note, edit the post and share a new version |
| Needs schedule | Choose a time so the approved post can publish |
| Expired | The review closed before it finished. Send the post for review again |
| Cancelled | The review was cancelled. Send the post for review again |

## Questions

### Who can send work for review?

Managers, Editors and Creators. Creators can ask their team and can send a workflow that includes a client stage, but cannot add a client stage of their own. Viewers cannot send work for review.

### Does sending a post for review clear its scheduled time?

No. The post keeps its time but does not publish until the last stage approves it.

### What happens if the scheduled time passes while a post is in review?

The post does not publish. When it is approved, Maeve Social clears the past time, and someone who can schedule picks a new one.

### What is the difference between a required and a suggested workflow?

A required workflow always runs for the posts it matches, and they cannot publish until it is done. A suggested workflow is filled in for you, and you can change it or send the post with no review.

### Can I skip a required workflow?

Not from the composer. Once the review is running, a Manager can override it with a reason, which approves the post and skips the remaining stages.

### Can I send a post for review before I choose a time?

Yes. It is approved without a time, and someone who can schedule picks the time afterwards.

### Which plans include reviews?

Standard and Premium include reviews, workflows and client review.
