Clipping a Video

Open a video in Media Room and select Edit video to create clips from it. You can save up to five clips at once and keep the original for later edits.

Making Clips

Open your video and select Edit video.
Choose Save as new clips to keep the original.
Set Start and End using the timeline or time fields.
Enter a filename and preview the selected range.
Select Add clip for each additional range, up to five clips.
Select Review clips, check the ranges and filenames, then select Create clips. The Review button shows the number of clips selected.

Maeve checks the estimated output size before processing. If a range is too large, shorten it and review again. The size estimate can limit an individual clip to about six minutes even when the batch has time remaining.

New clips appear in the source video's folder with the same labels. Each is a new MP4. Resolution and aspect ratio are retained, rotation is applied to the output, and only the first audio track is included.

Managers, Editors, and Creators can create clips. Replacing the original or moving it to the Bin requires Manager or Editor access.

Keeping or Replacing the Original

Choose the save mode before reviewing your clips.

Save as new clips creates separate library files and keeps the source video. Use this when you want to make more clips from the original later.

Replace original replaces the video in the existing library item. It keeps the item's folder and labels, but permanently removes the original video file once the replacement succeeds.

Replacement requires one clip and Manager or Editor access. The source must be a regular user upload in the Media Room, have no current usage, and never have been marked as used. It cannot be in the Bin or archived, and another replacement cannot already be running on it. Removing a previous post attachment does not reset its usage history.

If Replace original is disabled, use Save as new clips to keep the source and create a separate file.

The two save behaviours are different operations rather than one with a setting. Saving as new clips adds items and leaves the original alone. Replacing edits the item you already had and deletes the old video outright.

Tidying Up Afterwards

After new clips finish processing, Managers and Editors can select Move original to Bin on the completion screen. This is optional. Close the screen without selecting it to keep the original in the library.

The clips remain available if you remove the source. They are separate files. The original can be restored from the Bin for seven days and continues to use storage until permanently deleted.

If the original is attached to a scheduled post, Maeve blocks moving it to the Bin. Remove it from the post or wait until the post publishes before trying again.

Storage

Saving new clips uses additional organization storage while the original remains. Moving the original to the Bin does not free space immediately. Delete it forever from the Bin when you are sure you no longer need it.

Maeve reserves estimated output space when you submit a batch. If there is not enough space, free storage or shorten the ranges and try again. The estimate can be larger than the finished files.

While It Is Working

Clipping continues on Maeve's servers after you close the editor or browser. Wait for processing to finish before looking for the clips in the library. Only one clipping batch can run per workspace at a time.

If processing fails, read the error and return to the editor to adjust the ranges or retry. Unsupported sources include HDR or encrypted video, video above 4K or 60fps, and files Maeve cannot read. Outputs over 512MB also fail.

Using a Clip

Once processing finishes, select the clip in the library and choose Create content, or add it from the composer. Check the selected channel's length, format, and size requirements before scheduling. You can adjust its crop and cover in the composer.

Questions

Can I make several clips from one video?

Yes. Add up to five clips, each with its own start, end, and filename. Their combined duration can be up to ten minutes, subject to the output size limit.

Does clipping delete my original video?

Save as new clips keeps the source. Replace original permanently removes the original video file when the replacement succeeds.

Do clips keep the folder and labels of the source video?

Yes. New clips use the source video's folder and labels.

If I delete the original, do I lose the clips?

No. New clips are separate library files. Removing the original does not remove them.

Do clips use extra storage?

Yes. Saving new clips adds files to your organization's storage while the original remains. Files in the Bin also continue to use storage.

Can I preview a clip before saving it?

Yes. Set the start and end, preview the range, and adjust it before reviewing and creating the clips.

Can I use a clip in a post straight away?

Wait for processing to finish. Then attach the clip to a post and check the selected channel's media requirements.

Who can clip a video?

Managers, Editors, and Creators can create new clips. Replacing the original and moving it to the Bin require Manager or Editor access.

Why is Replace original greyed out?

Replacement requires one clip, Manager or Editor access, and a regular user upload with no current or previous usage. The source must be outside the Bin and archive, with no replacement already running.
